Why You Shouldn’t Let Pets Sleep In the Bed With You

Why You Shouldn’t Let Pets Sleep In the Bed With You

If you have a pet, then you probably know that there’s nothing like snuggling next to them while you’re in bed. They often provide comfort for when you’re anxiety and stress levels are high or when you experience emotional issues that are difficult to handle. Even though your furry family member can be a source of protection and comfort, there are a few reasons why you might not want to let your pets sleep with you.

Creepy Critters

There are several small critters that your pets could have on them that you’re unable to see along with quite a few that you can spot with the naked eye. Fleas and ticks are the most common pests that your pets could have on them, and if they sleep with you, then you could find them in your bed or on your body as well. Some pets can also have parasites, such as bookworms. You might be able to see them when they are expelled from your pet, but the eggs usually can’t be seen and often linger on the hair or skin.

Infections

Pets can carry a variety of infections including staph and meningitis. Bacteria can be transmitted in a few different ways. The mouth is the most common, especially when your pet decides to give you a big kiss when it’s least expected. If you have an open cut or sore on your skin, then this could be another way that bacteria can enter your body as well.

Bathroom Deposits

While using the bathroom in your bed likely isn’t something that your pets might do, they can have some fecal matter left behind on them after going outside or using a pad in the home. Even if your pet is meticulous during the cleaning process after using the bathroom, it’s possible that your pet could have fecal matter on its feet or other areas of its body after going outside. One way that you can remove this material is by cleaning your pet’s paws with rubbing alcohol.

Shedding

Pets can shed throughout the entire year but more often in the summer months. If your pet sleeps in your bed, then you’re likely going to have the hair that’s left behind on your sheets, your clothes, and your pillow. A separate blanket for your pet to sleep on is an option as you can wash this separately.

Pets are often considered members of the family. This usually means letting them sleep in your bed at least a few times. However, it’s important to know that there are extra pests that your pets could leave behind as well as substances that you don’t want to find in your bed after letting them sleep with you that could make you sick or cause an unwanted reaction.
