Life is a series of ups and downs. One day you’re happy, and the next, you’re sad. It’s what makes us humans. But there are times when emotions can get the best of us. You should learn to regulate your emotions so that you don’t hurt those that care for you. Use the following tricks to control strong emotions.
1. Don’t Be Swayed by Other People
People can be mean. They can say things that hurt you on purpose or without knowing. The best way to handle such a situation is to interpret the comments differently. Don’t assume that they’re attacking you. Even if they are, nothing should shake you. Be strong and stand your ground. Remind yourself that what you think about yourself is the only thing that matters. Other people’s opinions shouldn’t matter.
When someone says something disrespectful or annoying, take a step back and look at the comment from a spectator’s point of view. When you change your perspective, you’ll learn that not everybody is against you. Maybe they’re saying that because they are genuinely concerned about your wellbeing.
2. Don’t Avoid Emotions
There two things that you should never do when you feel overwhelmed with emotions: ignore them or overthink. Both actions will make you nervous and depressed. That’s because you’ll always think about what could have been or should have been. If you keep up with this behavior, you’ll eventually explode, and anger and regret will control you.
When you feel an emotion, let it be. If you want to cry, just let it out. When you express your feelings freely, you’ll feel relieved.
3. Breathe In and Out
Anger is a natural emotion. Unfortunately, it’s one of the most destructive emotions. When you get angry, you feel excessive hatred towards someone. If you feel like you’re about to do something terrible out of anger, leave the room.
Go to a different room away from people and take deep breaths. Try this technique. Close your mouth, and take quick breaths. Do that for at least one minute. After this exercise, you’ll feel calmer and more relaxed. Then, go back and finish your conversation. Never show the person that they made you angry. Just tell them that you wanted some fresh air.
4. Learn to See the Good
You should always learn to see the positive side of things. You should see yourself as blessed. You’re alive, and you have people around you that care. Even if you get on each other’s nerves sometimes, the love is stronger than the hate.
When something terrible happens to you, don’t overthink it. Ask yourself whether it will matter the next day or week. If it won’t, you shouldn’t allow it to bring you down. Also, stress can be a positive sign. It could mean that you need to make a few changes in your life so that you can stop feeling bad.
5. Take Charge
You are the master designer of your thoughts. Those ugly and destructive thoughts come from you and nobody else, instead of being depressed all the time. Be brave and face your thoughts. Why are you devaluing yourself? Your life is not gloomy all the time. There are times when you are delighted. Why should you linger on the unhappy thoughts for so long?
Take charge of your emotions. Remind yourself that your negative thoughts are just opinions. You know the truth about who you are. Therefore, always assess your negative emotions to find the source and neutralize them.
Don’t take things to heart. Learn to see the humor in bad situations. For example, you’re sad that you failed the test. But it’s not the end of the world, is it? It could have been worse. Can you believe that some people think the world is flat? At least you’re smarter than them.
When you add a little humor to a bad experience, it doesn’t seem so bad. You learn that happiness comes from within.
When we feel happy, it’s the best feeling, but when we’re sad, it’s the worst. You should learn to acknowledge and accept emotions so that they don’t interfere with your thought process. Use the above tips to maintain emotional stability.
